Why render from a floor plan rather than a photo
Many AI interior tools start from a photo, or from nothing, and generate a room. That is fine for inspiration, but a generated room is free to change things you cannot: a window can move, the ceiling can grow, and the sofa can quietly become a smaller one.
Starting from a scaled floor plan fixes those things first:
- The room is yours. Walls, doors and windows sit where they are on the plan, at real dimensions.
- The furniture is yours. The pieces in the render are the ones you placed, at their real size, so a style that only works with a smaller sofa shows up as a style that does not work.

A practical way to choose: render the same view in two or three styles that feel plausible, then look at them side by side. It is usually quick to tell which one you would live in, and the rejected ones are often more useful than the winner, because they show you what to skip in stores.

What an AI render is not
It is worth being clear about the limits, so the render is used for what it is good at:
- Not a photo. It follows your plan closely, and it is instructed not to move walls, windows or furniture, but it is still an AI image. Check it against the 3D view before you rely on a detail in it.
- Not a shopping list. There is no branded catalog behind the image, so the lamp in the render is an idea, not a product you can order.
- Not an editable scene. You cannot select the rug and change its color. You change the plan or the style and render again.
- Not free. Planning and 3D are free; renders are Pro, at 5 credits each.
To create the render, an image of the 3D view, the room's dimensions and wall height, the number of doors and windows, the names and sizes of the furniture and your chosen style are sent to Microsoft Azure OpenAI. Layoutr does not store them, and they are not used to train AI models. Microsoft may keep them for up to 30 days solely to detect abuse, and may process a render outside the EU. It follows the plan closely, but it is an AI image, not a photo, so compare it against your 3D view before you rely on a detail in it.
Can I upload a photo of my room instead?
No. The render starts from the 3D view of your own plan, not from a photo. That is the point: a photo-based generator restyles whatever is in the picture, while rendering from the plan shows the furniture you have placed, at the size it really is, in the room you are moving into, even if you have never stood in it.
